FIELD TRIPS These start at the gathering place listed. Always bring a picnic lunch. Additional information is provided in THE LIMPKIN CALL newsletter and you can contact the specific trip leader with any question, as the phone number is provided. Participation in field trips requires the signing of a waiver form prior to departure. November 8 Wednesday Ocala National Forest. This is an EARLY morning visit to nesting sites of woodpeckers and includes a stop at the Ranger Station for a session on the recovery of the red-cockaded woodpecker. Meet at Winn-Dixie Eustis at 6:30am. Leader- Peg Lindsay 326 2045 November 18 Saturday Sabal Bluff Preserve on Lake Griffin and then picnic lunch Venitian Gardens, both in Leesburg. Meet at Sabal Bluff just off either Route 44 or Route 441 Leesburg. Leader- Bruce Phillips 315 0593. December 15 Friday Christmas Bird Count. Can never be too many volunteers for this event so please try to make it, meeting at 7:00am at Emeralda Marsh, Wood Duck Parking Lot. Leader- Peg Urban 326 3868. Refreshments at the Blue House, Sunnyhill Farm at conclusion. January 10 Wednesday Blue Spring State Park, Orange City. The first person to write about this spring was that fabled traveler, John Bartram who visited in January 1766. Our trip includes a two hour boat ride on the St Johns River and hopefully, manatees. Meet at the Golden Triangle parking lot Mt Dora, 8:30am. Leader- Peg Urban 326 3868. State park fee is $ 5 per car and the boat trip will be $ 10-14, depending on group size. January 25-27
Thursday-Saturday Overnight Trip-- We will join the Space Coast Birding Festival for two days for this trip and stay in Titusville. It will include joint field trips with the festival and two nights at the Best Western in Titusville. Leader is Peg Lindsay 326 2045. Reservations and deposits in November; more details later. Only fifteen rooms are available, so book NOW. February 10 Saturday Lake Louisa State Park, is on a corner of the Green Swamp and is one of the 13 lakes in the chain connected by the Palatlakaha River. Good habitat not only for birds but numerous mammals. Meet at the Golden Triangle parking lot Mt Dora at 8:30am. Leader- Bernie Yokel 383 0501. State park fee for vehicle. February 21 Wednesday Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge, Deland. This is a great site where we have not visited for some time but it is winter birding at its best. Meet 8:00am at Golden Triangle parking lot Mt Dora. Leader- Peg Lindsay 326 2045. March 7 Wednesday Avian Re-Conditioning Center Apopka. This is a new location for us and is a wildlife education and rehabilitation center. It includes a falconry demonstration and depending on the number of participants, will cost between $5- $10. per person. Meet at Golden Triangle parking lot Mt Dora, 8:30am. Leader- Peg Urban 326 3868. March 31 Saturday Clay Island, Lake Apopka. We will have someone from the St Johns River Water Management District to accompany us in areas not open to the public. Meet at 8:30am Golden Triangle parking lot Mt Dora. Leader- Margaret Carlyon 735 2505. Picnic after the trip at Trimble Park. April 14 Friday Emeralda Marsh- Drive the Wildlife Trail. Meet at 8:30am at Wood Duck Parking Emeralda. Leader- to be announced. April 25 Wednesday Big Tree Park in Longwood. Visit The Senator, maybe the largest Bald Cypress in the US, though this is always controversial even if not really relevant. It is about 3,500 years on this spot and is 118 ft high and some 35 ft in circumference. The park there is great for picnic and in the afternoon we will go to the Orlando History Museum nearby; fee $ 5.50. Meet at the Golden Triangle Mt Dora at 8:30am. Leader-Peg Lindsay 326 2045. 2006-2007 MEETING PROGRAMS OVAS and TLNC will be combining meetings again this year. All meetings are free and open to the public and are held on Sundays or Tuesdays, October though April, at 2:00pm at Trout Lake Nature Center, one-half mile east of SR 19 in Eustis. Meetings feature a speaker on a subject relevant to Audubon goals, for approximately 45-60 minutes, followed by a brief business meeting of past and coming events. Refreshments are available beginning at 1:30pm. MEETING PROGRAMS October 24 Tuesday Regular meeting – 2:00pm. Birds of New Zealand. Professor Jim Dinsmore, retired professor of ornithology of the University of Iowa. November 12 Sunday Regular meeting- 2:00pm. BEARS. Tom Shupe of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission will give a presentation on our local black bears. December 9 Saturday 11:30am. This is our Christmas Picnic, held together with Trout Lake and is our only time to be together at the holidays. The picnic will be indoors at Trout Lake and please bring enough food to share with others who attend. Last year we had a very good turn-out of more than 50. OVAS/TLNC will provide table decorations, settings and drinks. January 16 Tuesday Regular meeting- 2:00pm. Beautiful Birds, Beautiful Music, this is a photographic event presented by a well-know wildlife and outdoor photographer, based in Florida, Kevin Doxstater. A presentation on the Audubon Birds of Prey Center in Maitland and its Eagle Watch program, with Lynda White from the Center. March 27 Tuesday –
6:00pm This is the OVAS Annual Meeting, Election of Officers/Director and the Potluck Dinner The program- Okeechobee and Everglades Restoration presented by Dr Paul Gray, Science Coordinator of the Lake Okeechobee Watershed Program for Audubon of Florida. April 22 Sunday Regular Meeting- 2:00pm. The Ecosystems of Florida, presented by the Florida author, historian and lecturer, Edgar J L’Heureaux. THE MUSIC MAN MELON PATCH- MARCH 24 Join us at the Melon Patch for this award-winning 1958 Broadway musical. Book, lyrics and score by Meredith Wilson. It played Broadway from December 1957 until April 1961 and won nine Tony Awards in 1958. Saturday, March 24 is the day; Tickets are $ 20 and include food and drink pre-performance and at intermission. We start at 1:30pm and curtain is at 2:00pm. This is a benefit performance to raise funds to support Audubon Adventures in the Lake County schools.
